Where Will The Money Be This Holiday Season – Online Or Offline?

Many people would assume they already know the answer to that question – and it is certainly true that e-commerce has become more and more popular in recent years.  There is no reason to suppose that it won’t continue to dominate in this coming festive season.

In fact, it may do even better this year due to the current credit crunch that is affecting so many of us.  After all, no one wants to be spending more than they have to and since Christmas is a seasonally expensive time when we want to make sure we can get all the trimmings we need to make the event a successful one.

There is no doubt that buying gifts can be a costly process, and everyone knows that you are far more likely to get a better deal online than you will if you go shopping on the high street.  The website design of many big name websites is suitably festive at this time of year and there are plenty of bargains to be had if you know how to look for them.  For example, a quick search for coupon codes for a particular website will soon reveal if you can get an even better deal for your money.

But it isn’t just the lower prices that makes internet shopping a good bet this season.  If you hate jostling among the crowds and queuing for ages to pay for what you want to buy then internet shopping definitely has a real advantage over the offline version.  Just imagine sitting in your comfy chair with a hot cup of coffee while it’s snowing outside, and ordering gifts for everyone in your family without having to set foot outside the front door in the process.  Even without the snow it’s still the easier option!

Standing Out Among The Millions – Why Good Web Design Is Essential

When was the last time you gave your website a makeover?  Did you launch it several years ago and it is now crying out for an update?  Have you even considered overhauling it, or is it something that is low down on your list of priorities?

Whatever the answer may be, you only need to start surfing the internet for a few moments to discover the fact that there are lots of websites out there that are woefully in need of attention.  Unfortunately, there are still a lot of people about who think that having a website is all you need to succeed with online.

That isn’t true, of course.  You need more than a website – you need a good website that has a strong design and a clear message, and if you don’t have that you stand a chance of making very few (if any) sales as a result.

Website design is one of the most important elements of any site, and it is fair to say that a lot of people don’t give it fair consideration.  It is very much a case of getting what you pay for, and a lot of people unfortunately think that designing their own website with minimal design skills or experience will be good enough to create a site that will rake in the sales day in and day out.  As anyone who has actually tried this will know, it isn’t as easy as you might think.

No Recession For The Online Market

If you have read the news, checked out the headlines or even talked to any other human being over the past few weeks, you cannot fail to have noticed the fact that there is a credit crunch taking hold all around the world.

This is no small recession either.  Major banks have gone down with alarming regularity, reminding us all that nothing is that safe after all.  But where does this leave all the other businesses – and more importantly, how will internet businesses cope?

In actual fact all the signs are that the internet may hardly notice the effects of a recession that will hit the high streets hard as it takes hold.  Even if not every country goes into a recession, there is no doubt that some will experience a mild one at the very least, and this is bound to be felt far and wide.

The beauty of internet businesses is that they are better able to weather this type of storm than many other conventional bricks and mortar ones are.  For a start internet marketing businesses have lower overheads; if they are run from a spare room at home then they may have extremely limited overheads.  This means that even if profits do take a hit they will have a far bigger cushion to protect them from going under.  There is far more flexibility in the day to day running of a business like this too, since it is less likely that they will have employees to worry about.  Many online businesses can be automated to a certain extent, which also adds to the flexible nature of them.

The other big factor which points to why the online market survives recessions more readily has to do with pricing.  Lower overheads mean lower prices in general, and this means that people are well aware that they can get items a lot cheaper online than they can elsewhere.  So when they need to find a bargain they won’t head into the high street – they will head to their computer and go online to see what they can find.  Even with the postage costs built in you can still get a much better deal online in many cases.

Knowing Where Your Visitors Come From

How do you drive traffic to your website?  If you are anything like the majority of people you will probably use a variety of methods to generate traffic, such as classified ads, pay per click marketing, search engine optimisation and so on.

But do you actually know how many visitors you are getting from each source?  If you don’t you may well be wasting time on methods that just aren’t working for you – and that means you aren’t using your time in the best possible way.

One of the most important things you can do to build up a good stream of traffic to your website is to continually look for new ways to promote it.  This is particularly applicable if you have a new site and you want to get it out there and start making some sales.

Let’s look at an example of how this works.  In week one you decide to optimise your site for the search engines, and you also place two classified ads that link back to your site.  That makes a good start.  Then in week two you decide to write three articles to submit to various article directories that will also drive traffic back to your site.

Is The Internet Getting Too Crowded?

Years ago there were far fewer websites than there are today.  With every day that goes by, more and more websites hit the internet for the first time, offering information, advice, products and services in the hope that they can make a decent living for the person who created and runs each one.

But how does this explosion of websites and web pages affect the people who use the internet every day – whether they use it as a means to make money, a means to find and buy items for all kinds of occasions, or simply as a way of finding information?

As far as making money is concerned, there is no doubt that the people who are relying on their website to make them some cash need to be focused on having the best website design possible to make them stand out from their competition.  The days when an average looking website would still rake in lots of sales are long since consigned to the past; nowadays you need to keep up and constantly check and double check your website and its ability to pull in the customers and encourage them to spend money if you really want to make an impression online.

But of course all this competition has meant a great opportunity for the people who are surfing the internet with money to spend.  Despite the current hard times that are affecting several countries around the world there is no question that people are still out there shopping, and in fact they are more likely to be looking online because the prices tend to be cheaper there due to the lower overheads.

Is Live Help Worth It?

There are plenty of ways that a website can interact with its audience, no matter what the purpose of that website may be.  Part of the task of internet marketing is making it easy for surfers to use your site once they actually get there, so it pays to experiment with different ways of attracting their attention.

Live help is just one of the ways you can achieve this, but does it work as well as some people might think?

Firstly, let’s take a look at what live help can do.  The idea is a good one – after all one of the biggest problems with many online businesses is that they appear very distant from their customers.  You go online to look at a particular website and you have no idea whether there is a real person behind it who actually knows what they are talking about.  Would you order a product or try out a service from a company that is distant in this kind of way?

The chances are you wouldn’t.  And that is where live help can help.  It gives people the opportunity to interact with you instantly.  You are sitting at your computer desk (no matter whether that is in a purpose built office or at home in the spare room) and someone comes online wanting to know how much you charge for delivery.  Within seconds you can find out the relevant information you need to know – such as where the order would need to go to – and give them the answer they are looking for.  It’s a simple system but it can be very effective.

The way it works is much the same as any other internet messaging service except that it operates via your website, so people can arrive on your site and click on the appropriate place to get the help they need.

Can A Business Started In A Spare Bedroom Really Succeed?

We’ve all read those stories about people who started off with one tiny product, mailing it out to buyers from their spare bedroom and building up a website which gradually stocked more and more products as time went on.  Before they knew it they had a thriving business and they had to move into proper business premises and ditch their regular job because they were doing so well.

But how often does this really happen?  Does it seem more common than it actually is, purely because we tend to hear about these rags to riches stories on the news and on the internet?

Whatever the answer to that question may be, there is no doubt that you can start a business in this way and grow into being one of the best businesses around today.  It may not happen overnight but it certainly does happen, and it is probably more achievable now than it has ever been before, thanks to the power of the internet and the internet marketing sector.

But as with every situation there is also a flip side to the coin.  For every home business that succeeds there will be plenty of others which don’t succeed.  But is that to do with the fact that the business is being run from a somewhat unconventional setting, or is it more to do with the person who is running it?

Why Information Is Still King

Ask any webmaster what the most important part of a website is and the vast majority will tell you it’s the content.  And quite rightly too, since good website promotion relies on having good content to draw people in.

Some people point to the importance of good website design as well, and it’s certainly true that the design of a website is hugely important.  For example, if you were in the market to buy an iPod or other expensive gadget online, you wouldn’t look for it on a site that had a basic and cheap looking design.  You’d go to a website that looked the part.

There is certainly an important role that designers have to play in the web of the 21st century, and there is no doubt that good design has led to the success of many a website in the past.  But content – and more properly information – has the biggest role to play, because it has the power to attract the search engines and the customers, and that leads to big sales in the future.

But some webmasters still don’t think there is a difference between content and information.  In truth there shouldn’t be, but there is.  Content fills web pages and takes up space, but there is no guarantee that it will be worth reading.  Some of it merely focuses on search engine optimization rather than actually providing anything of note to visitors.

Can Any Online Business Have A Blog?

Online businesses are very creative at finding new ways to connect with their customers.  They should be too, because it’s a highly competitive market and the money and the orders go to the businesses that make the best impression overall.

Connecting with their customers is an important way of building a relationship that will hopefully last into the long term and generate a lot of profits in the process.  Many companies use blogging to help them build that relationship, although some people question whether it is a suitable medium for all businesses to use.

So what is the answer?  Are there certain business sectors that wouldn’t benefit from having a blog to enhance their internet marketing efforts?

In truth it’s hard to think of a business sector that falls into this category; the question is more a case of what type of blog they are going to have than whether they should have one or not.  The benefits of a business blog are too many and numerous to ignore.

Businesses Are Tying Blogs Into Their Website

Back in the old days, blogging was the reserve of the individual with an opinion to give on the world.  It never even occurred to the average business person to even think about blogging for their business; if they did they probably would have been seen as a sub-standard business to have lowered themselves to such a level.

Nowadays of course it is very different.  Business blogging is very much in vogue, and it’s not just the small time businesses that are getting in on the action either.  Many major corporations have their own blogs, and these are often reached through a link on their website.

So what is the attraction of a blog for business purposes?  Can it really make a difference to the fortunes of the business itself?

It seems that it can indeed make a difference.  One of the major problems with online businesses is that they need to be able to establish trust between the customer and themselves.  The customer cannot see the business and anyone with the budget to invest in internet marketing can create a good website that looks good.  The only way to find out how good the service is, however, is to try it out.
